AERATION & OVER SEEDING
One of the best thing that can be done for the turf is to have it set up on an aeration program. An aeration treatment removes small cores of soil and thatch to allow air, moisture and nutrients to penetrate down to the root system.
The cores brought to the surface contain microorganisms which help the breakdown of the woody thatch tissue layer just below the lawn’s crown. As the thatch layer breaks down it is converted into organic matter that will then combine with existing soil particles. Also, as the cores begin to break down over a period of several weeks, the holes fill in with a mixture of organic matter and soil and the filled holes allow roots of existing grass plants to spread out and grow deeper, creating a healthier, thicker lawn.
The best time of year for aeration depends on the type of turf in your region. Cool season grasses like fescue, blue and rye, actively grow in the spring and fall making this the ideal time for aerating these grasses. Warm season grasses like Bermuda, Zoysia, and Saint Augustine actively grow in the summer and should be aerated during the hotter months of the year.
Over seeding a lawn soon after an aeration will aid in seed to soil compact which is essential to seed germination. Due to the stress put on lawns we recommend that seeding be done on an annual basis in the cooler time of year. We will choose a perfect blend of seed custom to the area it will need to grow. The new seed will; repopulate thin worn out areas, keep existing turf thick and uniform in appearance, and reduce the risk of other turf species and weeds from invading.
Benefits of Aerating:
- It helps air, water, and nutrients penetrate the soil easier creating a stronger root system.
- Aids in thatch management. Excessive thatch can lead to drought stress, fungus, and insect problems.
- Helps relieve compaction of the soil which allows the root system to grow deeper and more aggressive.
- Aeration aids in seed development by creating seed to soil contact.
Thatch is a layer of grass stems, roots, and debris that settle on the ground and either slowly decomposes and/or accumulates over time.
Grasses that commonly create a thatch problem are bluegrass, Bermuda, Bentgrass, and Zoysia grass. We recommend a dethatching when your lawns thatch layer exceeds 1/2″ anything less can be controlled by starting an aeration program as described above. Dethatching consist of using a machine that comes in and combs out all the dead thatch and root systems above the soil. After dethatching your lawn we will apply a perfect blend of seed to help thicken up and fill in worn out areas. Once the process is completed we recommend an aeration program to keep the thatch at an acceptable level.
Benefits of Dethatching:
- Promotes healthy root growth
- Increases fertilizer effectiveness
- Improves soil drainage
- Makes future lawn maintenance easier
